This course is designed for those who are working around excavations to safely detect utility services using recognised and approved detection methods.
OBJECTIVES:
Delegates will be trained in how to correctly use a CAT and Genny to locate buried services, as well as safe excavating techniques.
DURATION:
This is a 1 1/2 Days course with a minimum of 9 hours training time

COURSE CONTENT:
- Relevant legislation and how it relates to using equipment such as CAT Genny
- The purpose of the CAT and Genny as they relate to construction works
- The purpose of carrying out an on-site survey of existing services and different types of surveys available
- The correct PPE that workers need to wear
- How to identify different services from site plans and in-situ in the ground
- The hazards and risks of working in and around existing underground services
- The different functions of the CAT and what they mean
- The different functions of the Genny and what they mean
- Safe digging practices around underground services including digging of trial holes and supporting excavations correctly
- BSI PAS 128 is – understanding what this is and what the different survey types are under BSI PAS 128
- How to deal with damaged services and what the implications are of service strikes
- How to identify different soil types when excavating and the dangers of collapse
- How vibration and water ingress can affect the stability of an excavation
- The requirement for correct segregation when working around excavations
- How to comply with environmental requirements regarding the storage of excavated soil
- Understanding the different types of tools that can be used for excavation works
