First Aid at Work

What is this course?

This introductory qualification builds learners' understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect it, for themselves and the people around them. Delegates explore what mental health means, common mental health conditions, and how stigma around these issues can be reduced by talking openly. The course also looks at how everyday life and work can affect wellbeing, and introduces simple, practical strategies for building personal resilience and recognising when someone else may be struggling. By the end of the course, delegates should feel more confident talking about mental health, noticing the signs that a colleague may need support, and knowing where to signpost people for further help. The course also provides a solid foundation for anyone wanting to progress onto higher-level qualifications, such as First Aid for Mental Health.

Equipment provided: course handouts/workbooks, and access to the online knowledge test via NOCN's Test Platform.

An externally set and externally assessed multiple-choice knowledge test, completed via NOCN's online Test Platform. Pass mark: 80%. There is no refresher training option — if certification lapses, the full course must be resat.

Suitable for anyone in the organisation who wants to build their understanding of mental health. A good general-awareness course for all employees, and particularly useful for line managers, supervisors, HR/people teams, and anyone likely to support colleagues day-to-day.

Entry Requirements

• Available to those aged 16 and over
• A sufficient command of the English language to understand the assessment
• Attendees must be physically capable of demonstrating first aid procedures as they would in a real work environment, including performing CPR on a casualty on the floor
